Coming to really know Jesus is not an easy journey. And while the concepts are simple, I’ve learned to honor and respect that expedition. It has been full of obstacles, which I struggled through, yet taught me so much. As I trekked upon this path, I discovered some simple—yet key—concepts that helped me have a receptive spirit.

Gratitude: A Heartfelt Prelude to Prayer

When I begin my conversations with the Divine, I focus on my heart with intention to overflow it with gratitude. I want to pour out my love to God and acknowledge His presence in every moment of my life. This provides me an opportunity to deepen my reflection as I express thanks. I don’t just see the grand blessings of my life, but also express gratitude for the tender mercies, the answered prayers, and the whispered guidance that lights my path. As I am in a state of gratitude, I recognize His hand in my life. My soul sings with joy that I can commune with God.

Humility: Surrendering to Divine Wisdom

That gratitude helps me cloak myself with humility. In this mindset, I pray with awareness that I stand on holy ground. I release the illusion of control, surrendering to His wisdom, which far surpasses my understanding. In this sacred space, I acknowledge my limitations, let go of my ego, and open my heart to receive divine instruction.

This path is a humbling journey—one of self-awareness and constant repentance. But it’s a worthwhile expedition, because it leads me closer to the heart of God.

Asking Questions: A Childlike Trust in Divine Guidance

In gratitude and humility, I create quiet mental space of prayer. I understand that asking and seeking is my responsibility. You may not realize it, but asking the right questions is an acquired skill, and one that you can master. Don’t just ask for things you want or need. Ask for knowledge. Ask for His divine guidance in your prayers.

Start with simple questions. As you learn to hear His voice, your questions will become more complex, and your conversations will deepen. I ask questions that stir in the depths of my soul. I seek understanding. I seek clarity.

With childlike trust, I approach the throne of grace, knowing that every query is met with divine attention and love. I don’t let doubt obscure my path. Instead, I desire to deepen my connection with the One who knows me intimately. Trust that he will answer you. And be patient with yourself and with God.

Listening: Tuning into the Divine Symphony

What thoughts come to my mind? What feelings or emotions come over my body? I try to tune in to the symphony of that Divine chorus. I try to discern the gentle promptings that guide my steps.

Prayer is a sacred dialogue, a communion of hearts—yours and God’s. I attune myself to the voice, thoughts, and feelings that bring good fruits of the spirit. Then, I record these messages as a witness of His love for me. Writing down what I hear and feel allows me to reflect on what I heard and felt as I decide how to move forward. It teaches me how to discern.

Taking Action: Faith in Motion

With faith as a compass, I step forward in action, guided by the revelations I received in prayer. I try not to act out of obligation, but out of trust in God's plan for my life. Each step is a testament to my belief in His divine guidance. Those beliefs propel me forward on this journey of faith.

Acquiring the courage to act on what I heard gives me the opportunity to test the revelations I received. It’s important to understand that we don’t need to be afraid of being wrong. We are all deceived regularly because of this world. No one is immune to the manipulations of Satan. But you don’t have to be afraid of that. God understand your heart and knows when you act in purity. Developing a relationship of trust with Jesus Christ requires testing and evaluating the answers to your prayers.

This part usually creates the most fear in us. You must be willing to walking in faith, not fear. If you trust your heart and what you heard, God will direct you. Sometimes you may walk the wrong path for a time. But if you are true to your heart, wanting to follow God’s lead, he will guide you and give you gentle corrections as needed.

He wants a genuine, sincere relationship with you, not a fake one. He wants you to know HIM! That means learning who he is AND who he isn’t.

Discernment: Illuminating Truth in the Darkness

I test the feelings and revelations I receive, evaluating each prompting against my standards of truth. Understanding the fruits of the spirit outlined in Galatians 5 is a powerful way to measure your results.

As I grow in discernment, I find more clarity as I distinguish the voice of the Divine from my own thoughts, or the whispers of Satan. This evaluation and discerning process is where you begin to recognize his voice. This is how you build trust with Jesus Christ. As that strengthens, it also deepens your desire to spiritually grow and flourish.

The Journey Unfolds: A Tapestry of Divine Love

Don’t forget, the tapestry of YOUR life is beautiful and amazing! Sometimes it’s just hard to see it. Through prayer, you can discover that images in that tapestry. Each light of revelation becomes a thread woven with divine love—a love that knows no bounds, a love that beckons us closer to the heart of God.

As I’ve continued this journey of prayer and revelation, it fills me with deep gratitude knowing that I walk hand-in-hand with the One who knows me, loves me, and desires to communicate with me.

The threads of revelation obtained through prayer build powerful spiritual experiences. It's a sacred communion with God. It’s an intimate dance with the Divine. It's a journey shaped only through personal experience, trusting God's boundless love. As I walk this path using the these six key principles, I don’t just find answers to my prayers, I gain a sweet assurance of God's presence in every moment of my life.
