Kevin Gave from Nothing, Imagine Our Potential

Have you ever hesitated to give because you felt like you didn’t have enough to spare? I know I have. But this past Saturday, I met someone who completely changed my perspective. His name is Kevin, and his story left me inspired and deeply humbled.

Meet Kevin

KevinKevin just moved to Kansas City. He recently came from Dallas wanting a fresh start. Life hasn’t been easy for him—he lives out of a duffel bag, with no certainty about his next meal.

I first met him while serving the homeless—what they call "the beloved"—with Team Jesus. Kevin stopped by for a meal and to use the mobile shower. Just the basics to get by.

But what Kevin did next was anything but basic.

As we were talking with him, we learned Kevin only has two pairs of shoes. That’s it, just two pairs to his name. Yet, in the middle of our conversation, he reached into his bag, pulled out one of those pairs, and donated them for someone else in need.

I stood there, amazed. Here’s a man who has so little—literally living day to day—and yet he gave freely. Not from his abundance, but from his lack. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t second-guess. He just gave.

Kevin told me about his faith and his family, including his 18-year-old son back in Florida, who’s been going through some tough times. Despite his own struggles, Kevin’s heart is full of hope. He’s eager to see what God has in store for him here in Kansas City. His humility and generosity reminded me of the true spirit of giving—it’s not about how much we have, but about the heart with which we give.

If Kevin can give out of a duffel bag, what’s stopping us from giving out of our abundance? His story challenges me to do more, to give more, and to love more. Kevin reminded me that even the smallest act of kindness—like a pair of shoes—can make a huge difference in someone’s life. And it starts with each of us choosing to give what we can.
