Standing with Courage: Navigating Doubts and Uncertainties Part 3 of 3

In a world often defined by uncertainty and division, standing firm in our beliefs and convictions requires unwavering courage. This installment of our series explores the challenges of standing for what we believe in, the impact of poor leadership on our beliefs and identity, and the importance of courage in shaping our character.

Challenges in Standing Firm

Standing for what we believe in is not always easy. Doubts and uncertainties can plague our minds, tempting us to waver in our convictions. Whether it's societal pressure, personal insecurities, or external influences, the journey of standing with courage is riddled with obstacles. However, it's in the face of adversity that our true character is revealed.

From my own journey, I've learned that true courage often arises when our beliefs are tested or challenged. Many of us are surrounded by environments that reinforce our existing beliefs, whether it be our families, churches, or schools. These influences can shape our perspectives and ideologies, sometimes holding them in place for a lifetime.

Yet, the Lord has shown me that reality is often more complex than it seems. I've encountered ideas that challenge my understanding, pushing me to reconsider my long-held beliefs. In those moments, I face a choice: to humbly acknowledge my limited perspective and embrace the opportunity for growth, or to stand firmly in my convictions.

Embracing the possibility that I may be wrong requires vulnerability and openness to new ideas. It's a humbling experience that demands courage to step into the unknown.

On the other hand, standing in my convictions also requires courage. There are truths that I hold dear, truths that I know deep within my soul. One such truth is the reality of the Living Son of God, Jesus Christ. His love for me is infinite and unwavering, and I stand as a witness to His divine presence in my life.

In the face of persecution or doubt, I cling to His promises. His words in Scripture remind me to be strong and courageous, to trust in His power and love, even in the midst of tribulation.

As Joshua 1:6-7 reminds us, "Be strong and of a good courage…turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest." And in 2 Timothy 1:7, we're reminded that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

In these challenging times, I find peace in the words of Jesus: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Navigating Doubts and Uncertainties

Doubt is an inevitable aspect of the human condition. We question our beliefs, values, and even our very essence. However, it is through confronting these doubts that we fortify our convictions and enrich our self-awareness. By embracing uncertainty as an avenue for personal development, we can foster a deeper connection with our beliefs and a more resilient sense of self.

Throughout history, doubt and unbelief have often hindered God's children. "Yet in this thing, you did not believe the Lord, your God" (Deuteronomy 1:32). Jesus himself addressed the power of faith over doubt, emphasizing that with unwavering faith, even mountains could be moved (Matthew 21:21).

Consider the story of Peter walking on water towards the Savior. When he faltered in his faith and became uncertain, he began to sink. Jesus admonished him, saying, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14:31).

It requires courage to confront doubt and stand firm in our faith. As we exercise faith in God, our confidence in Him grows, bolstering our courage to step into the unknown. With each act of faith, our trust in God deepens, gradually eroding our fears and doubts.

The Impact of Poor Leadership

Leadership exerts a profound influence on our beliefs and identity. Whether in our families, communities, or broader society, the actions of those in authority shape our worldview. Unfortunately, when leadership fails, trust is eroded, divisions arise, and our sense of self can be compromised. I witnessed firsthand the effects of poor leadership within the church I belonged to for over 25 years. The emphasis on unquestioning obedience to leaders, seen as infallible, led many to lose faith and identity when these leaders faltered. The refusal of these leaders to admit mistakes only widened the chasm between members and dissenters. How can individuals hold firm to their convictions when those they trusted as oracles of God fail to display vulnerability, humility, or accountability?

The Importance of Courage

Courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to act despite it. It's the inner strength that enables us to stand firm in our convictions, even in the face of opposition. By cultivating courage, we empower ourselves to live authentically, speak our truth, and champion causes that align with our values. In doing so, we inspire others to do the same and create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities and beyond.

Consider the countless examples of courageous men and women in scripture. From Abraham and Sarah's journey into the wilderness to Joseph's leadership in Egypt, from Moses confronting Pharaoh to David facing Goliath, these individuals exemplified unwavering courage rooted in their faith in God. When we emulate their courage, acting despite our fears, we tap into divine power and strengthen our faith. As Joseph Smith taught, true faith requires sacrifice and unwavering confidence, enabling us to overcome opposition and fulfill our divine potential.

“But those who have not made this sacrifice to God, do not know that the course which they pursue is well pleasing in his sight; for whatever may be their belief or their opinion, it is a matter of doubt and uncertainty in their mind; and where doubt and uncertainty is, there faith is not, nor can it be. For doubt and faith do not exist in the same person at the same time. So that persons whose minds are under doubts and fears cannot have unshaken confidence, and where unshaken confidence is not, there faith is weak, and where faith is weak, the persons will not be able to contend against all the opposition, tribulations and afflictions which they will have to encounter in order to be heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ Jesus; and they will grow weary in their minds, and the adversary will have power over them and destroy them.” (Lectures on Faith, Sixth Lecture, vs. 12.)
