Lighting the Way with 5 Pillars to Alleviating Poverty
In a world where poverty continues to cast a dark shadow over millions, it is essential for each of us to step forward and become beacons illuminating a path toward healing, hope and faith. When people are suffering from scarcity, it becomes difficult to see beyond our despair. It is hard to believe that there is any hope for change. It is challenging to have faith that God sees you. You wonder if he even cares.
According to the latest global poverty statistics, an estimated 689 million people live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $1.90 a day. Closer to home, the poverty rate in the United States is 11.4%, meaning over 37 million Americans struggle to obtain just the essentials of life. Of those, almost 12.6 million of them are children.
Amidst these sobering realities, we may wonder how we can make a difference in their lives. But you can!
The mission of SonHaven is to create opportunities for you to help those who suffer in poverty. Guided by principles of faith and compassion, the core of our efforts lie in five pillars of service. Each pillar is like a steppingstone to a better world. They build upon each other. They are a vital component of our mission to end poverty and restore hope.
Join us in executing these five pillars to alleviate poverty!
5 Pillars of Alleviating Poverty
-
Providing needful sustenance and support. The, let’s fill their bellies with food.
-
Building sustainable shelter and safety. Let's to fill their homes with hope.
-
Offering pertinent education and learning. Let's fill their minds with faith and knowledge.
-
Creating opportunities to work and play. Finally, let’s fill their time with meaningful purpose.
Pillar 1: A Haven for Hope and Healing
For those who have endured the relentless trials of poverty, hope can be elusive. There are many organizations throughout the world serving the poor, and though that can bring hope, providing for their physical needs is only a temporary solution.
We must first focus on bringing a lasting hope to those in need. Filling bellies and clothing nakedness is important. Building lasting hope and faith in Jesus Christ is essential. A lasting hope comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Let’s seek to provide the necessities of life through a Christ-centered focus of building faith in Jesus Christ, who then gives hope for a better life.
Part of hope is healing. Jesus Christ is the Great Physician, who heals hearts, souls, and bodies. To become whole, one needs all aspects healed. The first is to heal hope and belief. As your hope increases, your mind and body develop the faith to receive healing. We're talking about holistic healing. Sure, there are hospitals and clinics, medicines and science. And though those have their place, so do faith-based, energetic and holistic healing methods
Through this Christ-centered approach, we can nurture spiritual growth and holistic healing as we offer a haven where broken souls can find solace and the strength to persevere. We are all broken in one way or another, and we all need added hope and healing in Jesus Christ. When God heals us, he heals every part of us.
Pillar 2: A Harbor of Sustenance and Support
Poverty manifests itself in lack of the most basic of human needs: access to food, clean water, and essential resources. In tandem with the first pillar, this second pillar provides the physical sustenance and support the supplements their spiritual sustenance.
Just as a ship docks in a harbor to restock and resupply after a long journey, we also seek a safe harbor where we can physically, emotionally, and spiritually rejuvenate. Extending a helping hand to those in need provides physical sustenance to provide basic life needs. That humanitarian service becomes a harbor of support.
No individual or family should go without the fundamental necessities. But what are those necessities? Our mission is not only to provide the essentials of life, such as food, water, clothing, and shelter. We also seek to provide the necessary tools needed to go beyond survival and into thriving. It is to make available the tools and resources needed to provide for themselves. The sustenance and support are not only physical or tangible goods and supplies. They are also emotional and spiritual nourishment and provision.
With your help, our outreach initiatives and community campuses aim to bridge that gap, offering a lifeline to those struggling to meet their daily needs and then receiving tools and support to leave the harbor and embark on a new adventure.
Pillar 3: A Refuge with Shelter and Safety
Safety and shelter are indispensable components of human dignity. Yet millions around the world lack access to safe or adequate housing. This pillar is built upon the previous two pillars of faith and hope while receiving essential sustenance and support. Bringing people out of poverty includes providing a safe refuge from the storms of life. In a literal sense, that means a place to live.
True safety and refuge only comes from God. There is no alternative. Isaiah writes in the Old Testament how Jesus Christ is that safe refuge. “You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat” (Isaiah 25:4). Ultimately, as we build hope and faith, we will all come to find that refuge in Christ.
Part of feeling safe and secure is adequate shelter. We recognize this critical need and aim to provide a refuge where individuals and families can find respite from the harsh storms of life. As we are able to expand our resources, our intent to is to construct and remodel homes and apartments, ensuring that every person has a livable and safe place to call home.
Pillar 4: A Sanctuary for Faith and Learning
Breaking the cycle of poverty requires empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to forge a path toward self-sufficiency. Helping them solve their immediate needs allows them space to look to the horizon for a brighter future. You’ve heard the well-known proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
SonHaven seeks to establish sanctuaries for faith and learning, offering opportunities for spiritual education, personal growth, vocational training, and life-skills development. Through these initiatives, we hope to equip individuals with a balanced life and the tools necessary to build better futures for themselves and their communities.
Part of well-rounded education is not just learning vocational or basic life-skills training. It extends to spiritual education. We not only want to bring people out of their physical poverty. We seek to bring them out of their spiritual captivity. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs I the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Those who are spiritually poor are not spiritually deprived. They are humble, but they also know who they are and who their God is.
Let’s move people from spiritual impoverishment to be firmly set upon a firm foundation of Christ and of sustainability.
Pillar 5: An Opportunity to Work and Play
Poverty often robs individuals of the simple joys of life, including the ability to work and engage in recreational activities. We understand the importance of fostering a sense of purpose and community. It is through these communities that we can learn unity and oneness through our service and sociality.
Breaking free of poverty is daunting. Those living in need often cannot climb out of that dark pit by themselves. Sometimes all they need is a leg up. As we build our SonHaven campuses, we will provide ample opportunities for those needing work to get to work. Creating opportunities for temporary work gives on-the-job training, builds self-esteem, and teaches interdependence in our communities.
In addition to offering work for those in need, creating opportunities for learn and play within a loving and supportive environment can deepen the unity and oneness of our Christ-centered communities. It’s important to nurture not only physical well-being but also emotional, mental, and spiritual health. This will bring people out of poverty so they may live life to its fullest.
